Safety and Efficacy of a Denture Adhesive Film. W. YOW* and R. FELLER (Pettis Memorial VA Medical Center and Clinical Research Center, Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, Loma Linda, California, USA).
Previous studies have shown that denture adhesives can improve denture function. An innovative denture adhesive in the form of a die-cut film has been developed. A clinical study was designed to determine the safety and efficacy of the adhesive film in complete dentures. 60 subjects with either good, fair or poor complete maxillary dentures according to the Kapur Index of Retention and Stability were divided into three groups. The denture adhesive film was placed on the tissue surface of the maxillary denture and the Kapur Index measured at 90 minutes. All poor and fair measurements improved to good while good remained good (P<.01 as demonstrated by the McNemar Test). Subjects then were instructed in the use of the film and given a supply for daily use. After 30 days, no tissue trauma or pathology was seen. A questionnaire completed by all subjects indicated satisfaction with the product. Thus, we conclude that the use of the denture adhesive film improved retention and stability, and did not cause oral pathology or trauma. This study was supported by U.S. Medical Systems, Inc.
